Stainless steel: what is so special about it and what we use it for.

Stainless steel began to be used at the beginning of the 20th century, although the first existing patent for this material dates to the end of the 19th century. American and European scientists spent years researching with different metals to try to make a steel that would stand the test of time without rusting. They all worked with different metal alloys until they discovered that, in order to avoid corrosion, the alloys had to include chromium and contain a percentage of carbon of less than 0.15%.

Nowadays we can find different qualities of stainless steel, depending on the use that is going to be given to it. This material is obtained through the development of alloys of common steel with chromium and different metals such as manganese, nickel and others such as molybdenum, copper and silicon.

The 60% of the world’s stainless steel production comes from its own recycling, as its composition allows easy recovery of all the elements. It is a material that is highly resistant to oxidation and corrosion, as well as to knocks, scratches and thermal variations, thus quadrupling the life of ordinary steel. Its non-porous surface prevents impurities from being deposited and bacteria and viruses from proliferating, which is why it is a hygienic material and is used in the pharmaceutical, medical and food industries.

At Metalmalla we work with austenitic stainless steel for the food, medical-pharmaceutical and automotive industries, among others. We mainly use AISI-304L and AISI-316L grades, being the most resistant to corrosion and the best quality. With this material we manufacture, for example: steel grids for the storage, drying and preservation of food, protections for production and packaging lines, meshes for the filtering and sieving of medicines, grids for the air intakes of cars, etc.

Our customers are always informed about the material we use for the development of our products and they know that it complies with the existing regulations, as we provide the steel quality certificate with all its specifications.
